Forming part of the London 2012 Festival, the World Shakespeare Festival is a culmination of the Cultural Olympiad. The UK wide festival will bring together artists from across the world to create new productions of some of Shakespeare’s more renowned work. Baghdad’s Iraqi Theatre Company have created a version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet for a new generation. Romeo and Juliet in Baghdad is the famous love story amid conflict between families, communities and generations. In Iraq, a country where sectarian strife between Sunni and Shia, ignited and fuelled from outside, has left the population exhausted by a cycle of violence and revenge. Directed by Monadhil Daood, Romeo and Juliet in Baghdad is in Arabic with English surtitles. Romeo and Juliet in Baghdad will play at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from the 26 April – 5 May 2012.
