Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell Theatre Break Package

Tom Conti will take the title role in the revival of Keith Waterhouse’s play Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell.

Jeffrey Bernard was a journalist who started writing a weekly column for the New Statesman in 1973, before moving to the Spectator in 1975. He was notorious for his witty observations and wrote about his frequent visits to The Coach And Horses pub or other Soho drinking establishments. His drinking impacted upon his health and job; the Spectator often had to post the notice “Jeffrey Bernard is unwell” instead of the column.

Still alive when the play was first performed, Bernard died in 1997, following renal failure. In an interview with the Idler in 1995, his answer to the question ‘What’s it like not drinking?’ was “Awful. Boring. Miserable. Lonely. It’s like being half dead.”

The play is directed by Ned Sherrin and designed by John Gunter.
